NHL Stanley Cup: Stats and Predictions

In the National Hockey League, or the NHL, the Stanley Cup is awarded to the playoff champion team of the year, whose name is engraved onto the cup. There are more than 3,400 names on the cup today. There are many traditions with the Stanley Cup; examples include drinking champagne from the cup, each player in the winning team could keep the cup for a day, and more.

Each year, sixteen hockey teams in the USA qualify for the initial playoff bracket. First, the top three teams from each of the Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central, and Pacific divisions are selected. Then two more teams per conference (four spots) are given to the third best teams at random, for there are multiple third-place teams, deeming the “wild card”.

This  2024-2025 chart below illustrates the matches played by the selected teams. Each lettering represents the divisions, A for Atlantic, M for Metropolitan, C for Central, P for Pacific, and WC for wild card teams. The East and West conference has eight teams, with four teams per division. The first set of games are division-based, which means that each team from the same division would play each other, while the second set of games are the division finals, where the winner of each of the first sets play each other. The third games are conference-based; winners of the division finals compete at the conference level. Finally, the champion is crowned when the winner of the Eastern Conference plays the winner of the Western Conference, which, subsequently, wins the Stanley Cup.

Last year the Florida Panthers won the Stanley Cup. They played with exceptional team depth, choosing key players such as Aleksander Barkov and Sam Reinhardt (That’s him in the picture!) to play alongside each other to overpower the other team. They used tactics such as pressuring the other team to move behind, while being patient to nab the puck. Their goaltending was also very good. The goaltender nabbed the puck at crucial moments when the other team was about to score. Overall, their performance was superior to the other teams’.

This year, the Florida Panthers, Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights are top favourites for winning the Stanley Cup. The Florida Panthers are likely to win again with their tactics and their triumph from last year. The Dallas Stars have a deep offense, internal depth, and strong goaltending. The Colorado Avalanche also has an advanced offense, while also maintaining a strong defensive core. The Vegas Golden Knights have a strong offense. The Carolina Hurricanes have an aggressive defence and aggressive forechecking. Who knows? Any of the teams listed could win, and might succeed in seizing the Stanley Cup this year.
