The Student Council (StuCo) has been a part of BASIS student life for years. It allows students a voice in how their school is run, and to bring up important issues in their school community.
Last year, StuCo was responsible for changing many things around the school, such as planning an eighth grade sushi night, getting out lunch for the 6th and 7th grade, and implementing the extremely popular extended out lunch.
StuCo is proctored by Ms. Dickens, and is made up of one representative from each class, meaning two for all middle school grades and at least one for every high school grade. Representatives are elected by members of their element. StuCo also has a secretary, who is responsible for keeping track of council meetings and maintaining the organization of the council.
StuCo is led by a president and vice president pair, who run together and are elected by the whole school. This year, the two pairs are Saira Kakodkar (11th grade) as president with Aiden Boyd (11th) as VP, and Amelie Wadler (11th) as president and Thor Wadler (8th) as VP.
On Wednesday, October 8th, the pairs had a debate, discussing the policy they each would implement if they were to be elected. The debate covered everything from their vision for the school to the current challenges and issues at the school.
Saira and Aiden spoke about their vision for student life improvements, including a printer for the high school students, more relaxed middle school tech rules after school, and a more organized bike room. They are also petitioning for more school traditions, including a school mascot costume, middle and high school field day, and a school-wide Easter egg hunt. The two also talked about having a mentoring system, in which a middle schooler gets paired with a high schooler, to replace some Wellness Wednesdays. In their closing statements, they said that they already have a lot of their plans approved with Admin, meaning they are ready to implement them as soon as they are elected.
Amelie and Thor discussed their vision for a more united BASIS community. This included more events for seniors, pep rallies for school spirit, and more middle and high school events. They also mentioned being allowed to bring kids from other schools to events to widen the student’s social circles. They will also push for Pre-comp and Comp tutoring for middle school and AP tutoring for high school, especially freshman taking their first APs.
Elections for president and vice president will take place on October 14th, so be sure to vote and have your voice represented in the school community!
